Used car buying guide.
From shortlist to viewing.
Build an evidence-led shortlist
Save adverts, compare available mileage and MOT records, and note what the seller still needs to explain. Free Garage comparisons help you decide which cars to view.
Prepare questions, then inspect
The checklist below helps you plan a viewing. Advert claims and assessment guidance cannot establish present condition. Resolve unknowns with records, separate provenance checks and an independent inspection.
Before you travel
Request the registration, VIN, service records and current mileage. Compare the advert with the records you can verify.
- Ask for dated maintenance invoices.
- Clarify any mileage discrepancy in writing.
- Confirm which checks are included and when they were run.
At the viewing
Take your time and, where possible, arrange an independent inspection.
- Inspect the car in daylight and request a cold start.
- Look for uneven tyre wear, leaks and inconsistent panel gaps.
- Check warning lights, controls and the service record.
Before you commit
Resolve open questions before agreeing a price or transferring money.
- Obtain a current provenance report from a trusted provider.
- Get quotes for identified repairs before negotiating.
- Keep the advert and written agreements with the seller.
